BusPatrol: The AI-Powered School Bus Safety Program That Issues Tickets and Keeps Students Safe!

National Trails School Bus BusPatrol Safety Program

At National Trails, the safety of our student passengers is our top priority. We are excited to introduce BusPatrol, an innovative, AI-powered school bus safety program designed to protect students as they board and disembark from school buses. This cutting-edge technology aims to address one of the most critical concerns in student transportation—ensuring that students are safe when getting on and off the bus.

What is BusPatrol?

BusPatrol is a violator-funded program that leverages advanced camera and AI technology to monitor traffic around school buses. When a vehicle illegally passes a stopped school bus, the cameras capture the violator's license plate number, and the AI system sends the information to local law enforcement. The driver is then issued a ticket through the mail.

This system not only
holds drivers accountable but also serves as a powerful deterrent to those who might otherwise ignore school bus stop signs and signals, putting children at risk.

Michigan School Bus Traffic Laws

The Michigan school bus traffic law prohibits motorists from passing any school bus that is stopped with red or yellow flashing lights. Vehicles must be stopped at a minimum of 20 feet away from the bus and may not resume driving until the lights cease flashing, or the bus is in motion.

What are the Michigan School Bus Traffic Laws?

  • No passing the school bus when red or yellow lights are flashing
  • This includes driving in the same or opposite direction of the school bus
  • Stop at least 20 feet from the stopped school bus
  • Motorists may not pass a stopped school bus unless there is a divided highway or road median
  • The penalties for this civil infraction are fines ranging from $100 to $500, as well as court costs
  • The fine is doubled for unlawfully passing a stopped school bus in a school zone
  • Fines apply to the registered owner of the vehicle, even if the registered owner was not the driver at the time of violation.

Be careful of who you lend your car to, and ensure that they are aware of the school bus traffic laws!

How BusPatrol Enhances Student Safety

1. Real-Time Monitoring and Enforcement

The BusPatrol system is equipped with high-definition cameras that continuously monitor the surroundings of the school bus. When the bus is stopped and students are boarding or disembarking, the cameras are activated to capture any vehicles that illegally pass the bus.

This real-time monitoring ensures that violators are caught immediately, and their actions are
reported to local authorities.

2. State-of-the-Art Technology

The BusPatrol system includes the following hardware components to support the technical solutions of the software integration:

  • MDVR & Cloud Connectivity
  • AVA 180° AI Cameras
  • Stop-arm Cameras
  • Internal Cameras
  • Windshield Camera
  • Rear-view Camera
  • Side-load Camera
  • Thermal Fever Camera

3. AI-Powered Precision

The integration of AI technology allows for precise identification of violators. The AI system processes the captured footage, accurately identifying license plates and other relevant details, which are then automatically sent to law enforcement.

This technology eliminates the need for manual monitoring, ensuring that every violation is recorded and addressed promptly.

3. A Safer Environment for Students

By holding drivers accountable, BusPatrol creates a safer environment for students. The presence of this technology on our buses acts as a powerful deterrent, encouraging drivers to exercise caution and follow the law when school buses are stopped.

This increased awareness and enforcement help prevent dangerous situations where students could be at risk while crossing the road.

A Cost-Effective Solution for Communities

One of the most significant advantages of the BusPatrol program is that it is violator-funded, meaning it does not require any additional funding from local taxpayers. Here’s how it works:

  • No Additional Taxes: Since the program is funded by fines collected from violators, there is no need for local governments to raise taxes to cover the costs of the technology or its implementation. This makes BusPatrol a cost-effective solution for enhancing student safety without burdening the community financially.
  • Self-Sustaining System: The fines collected from violators not only cover the costs of the technology but also help maintain and potentially expand the program. This self-sustaining model ensures that the program can continue to operate effectively without relying on public funds.

Why National Trails Supports BusPatrol

At National Trails, we are committed to providing safe, reliable transportation for our student passengers. By adopting the BusPatrol program, we are taking a proactive step toward enhancing safety measures on our buses.

This technology aligns with our mission to protect the well-being of every child who rides with us.

Partnering with Parents and Communities

We believe that safety is a shared responsibility. By implementing BusPatrol, we are partnering with parents, schools, and local communities to ensure that every student arrives at school and returns home safely.

The program not only protects students but also promotes safer driving habits in the community, benefiting everyone on the road.

Conclusion

The introduction of BusPatrol on National Trails school buses marks a significant advancement in student safety. This AI-powered, violator-funded program ensures that drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses are held accountable, creating a safer environment for students without raising local taxes. We are proud to bring this innovative technology to our buses and look forward to the positive impact it will have on our communities.
